You're Next (2011) Review
I always feel like I'm an amateur when it comes to reviewing horror movies, while the people who make the best horror movies are professionals. And here Mr. Wingard is a flat out guru when it comes to assembling a cleverly elaborated Revisionist Slasher movie. I don't know, it reminds me fairly well on how movies are as much a commentary on their times despite being the same genre. So when you compare this movie to other great slashers from different decades like Nightmare on Elm Street, or even Psycho and Scream, you come across critiques and fears of their respective eras. Yes, at the surface You're Next seems generic at first. But that's what makes it truly scary: when the death scenes are but one type of horror. At the risk of spoiling, moments that stem from family drama to evil capitalism to the fact the slashers themselves are three dimensional are what make it unique. And whether the twist is seen coming or not by the end, you still gain those post-modern smarts Wes Craven was best known for in the 90s. I honestly got to hand it to everyone for somehow making a horror movie this deep and creative in the same year as The Cabin in The Woods.
