Vampire Hunter D (1985) Review
As an anime film this was pretty badass. As a horror film it was between meh and okayish at best. That's not to say it lacks horror movie traits of its own. From the backstory of a certain Vampire lineage to a death scene or two, if not the designs of certain creature/beasts, it certainly qualifies. Plus it's especially good at blurring intellectual moments with the emotional ones (particularly at the beginning when they discuss the 2 kinds of quiet people) in order to immerse. Granted it may just be because of it being 80s horror, and the fact it mostly bases itself on being dark fantasy due to being an anime film (despite no doubt influencing other works from Blood C and Hellsing to even Castlevania and Inuyasha). So pretty much expect a light horror film with what you usually enjoy from anime, be it the animation, music, intricacicies in story and visuals, atmosphere or monologues.
With obviously the violence being the one exception it shares in spades for the sake of their respective genres.
