The Ring 2 Review

The best horror movies can become the worst because they risk inspiring the exact opposite of their intention: creativity. In fact, when it comes to creativity, the idea of a franchise is just as debatable in terms of the hands involved. As for rip offs, cash-ins, etc. some can be more apparent than others. But it is thanks to that same creativity why usually the best films have nothing to do with each other. That's not to say every movie has to be The Cabin in the Woods, It Chapter 1, The Ring, nor even Insidious. You'll just notice that as much Jordan Peele as Alexandre Aja or Clive Barker have made original movies without further installments directed by themselves. This is because the first movies alone were good ideas on their own, meaning that movies like The Ring 2 is what happens when you try to fix something that wasn't broken (to the point you're breaking it anyway given the first film's renown). I can understand The Ring 2 is likely how Japan felt with what we did to Ringu the first time. I just believe The Ring still made the effort to maintain its core inspiration rather than rehash the value out of it like this.
