My horror movie reviews

The Mist Review

I believe what really brought this movie to life was the variety of homages it pays to different decades. In terms of creatures you’re essentially brought back to as much the giant bugs and arachnids of the 50s and 60s as you are ambiguous aliens/monsters from the 80s (with The Dead Can Dance’s signature song to match). The character of Mrs. Carmody recalls the religious fanatics of 70s films like The Wicker Man and Carrie while the fact it was an early 90s Stephen King story adaptation doesn’t show until you get the kind of ending (which Mr. King even approved Mr. Darabont on) that would best be seen in the later half of that same decade. Of course some of the more gruesome scenes give away how it’s a film that came out in the 2000s. Eitherway Mr. Darabont proves how he’s had better experience adapting Mr. King’s novels than even Kubrick himself since The Shawshank Redemption and makes sure that even fans of Mr. King’s books are taken by surprise.
