My horror movie reviews

The Last Winter Review

On one hand this is essentially The Thing but with a more homely 2000s atmosphere. Meaning it takes place in the same setting, and there’s definitely an otherworldly creature they have to watch out for. In fact, given how it’s the same director, this is essentially a spiritual sequel to Wendigo (even though the creature, ironically enough, is rendered through CGI rather than practical effects) as the creature itself replaces the alien. But, much like Wendigo itself, the horror is up to interpretation on whether the creature really did exist or it was in their dying imagination. That and the over-the-top violence is replaced with that same psychological horror, even though there are a few mildly gruesome scenes here and there (despite them still being sparing compared to the brutality of most other 2000s horror films). I suppose this also felt like a more worthy follow-up to The Thing rather than 2011’s The Thing in general.
