The Final Girls Review

I think what makes this such a good horror film is, from pure essence, it shouldn’t even count as one. Yes, it follows through with the conventions of a classic 80s slasher, but not in a way that has to be taken seriously. In fact, given how the movie starts out, you could see it more as a cleverly allegorical comedy-drama about the grief and coming to terms with the loss of a loved one. Almost in the same vein as Follow You was with the updated STD paranoia from the 80s, The Final Girls finds a way to link horror films from that same past with a fictional tragedy from one of the actors that worked in it. It’s also the director’s most inspired film to date following a raunchy yet passable Harold and Kumar threequel while also succeeding with a less impressive (albeit still fun and smart) Rebel Wilson vehicle.
