Talk to Me Review

The Philippou brothers certainly show how they've come a long way since working on minor credits for The Babadook. For those unfamiliar they're best known by their YT alias "The Rackaracka", who are essentially Smosh meets Damien Leone (or Jason Eisener/Monty Python + roids, dunno) from down under. One thing I can say is that the first half shows glimpses of their trademark neo-splatter before the rest of the film goes from disturbing to intelligent to grueling on plenty of levels. Of course it's almost hard to tell if they were really working on a budget, focusing more on story than substance or both. What fits, though, is while Ms. Kent was afraid to exploit the same "Australian feel", the Philippous flat out gave us a dying kangaroo on the side of the road by the end of the first act. It's essentially a unique experience to have seen two dudes that essentially made videos for kicks (albeit with a ton of hard work) manage to encapsulate their style into a feature length production. I can't really laud them too much for originality as most of TheRackaRacka's videography has consisted of over-the-top parodies, meaning I'd be potentially insulting their roots. Points either way for choosing that angle with Talk to Me and still succeeding.

Especially since half of those parodies have dealt with horror anyway.
