My horror movie reviews

Suspiria (1977) Review

Can’t really point out much about this movie except that it’s good, even though the poster is very much misleading. I mean yeah it’s a horror movie that takes place in a dance academy, but there is virtually nothing sexual about it (at least by 70s exploitation standards). Still, it is very fun and very shocking as horror movies should be (to the point it goes further than usual in ways that nearly come out of the blue yet work to its mystery based advantage). Some scenes feel like Kubrick, others feel like John Travolta might have made a cameo (though Miguel Bose, surprisingly enough, was unexpected enough). Some drag and feel cheesy while others showcase uncommon intelligence (particularly during the third act when witchcraft is brought up) and even feel like a painting if you were to freeze a frame. I can certainly say that Argento is the Coppola of horror. The way scenes are lit in this movie appear as though they would go on to be used as the template for other horror films in even that same decade. Plus I can't really complain about the violence as Argento was in that same era to get away with as much as he could in a horror film (which was actually more mature than usual compared to most other Italian directors that went for it around that time from Pasolini to the obvious disturbing one that pioneered found footage in 1980). One last thing I can add is that I very much wanted to watch this version before watching the 2018 update, even if I was more frightened by the latter for some reason.
