Opal (2020) Review.
Spiritually this is very much a psychological horror movie. The first time I saw it it certainly counted as one. Though I will applaud Mr. Stauber for reminding everyone that, much like the cg bits, the 80s were but one aesthetic. It is aware that anything which aims to as much impress as shock you in the present qualifies. Especially when it deceives you with the creatively vibrant first act just to ambush you with its subtle yet biting subject matter throughout the rest of the film. It really gets to you with the least amount of qualities it requires to count as a horror movie yet somehow qualifies perfectly.
