My horror movie reviews

Night of the Comet Review

I didn't want to watch this film right away, but the streaming service was going to remove it soon, so I had to take advantage. Post-apocalyptic films aren't usually my cup of horror, but not only did the plot and execution remind me of a trippy Romero/Hughes/Carpenter hybrid, it practically emanates the best of its decade even as it's only gotten 3 to 4 years in. Some of the visuals done outside (during the daytime) look arresting, as though they're done with a gradient that would have yet to be used until the early to mid 90s. The indoor visuals, however, give such a carefree yet emotionally welcoming atmosphere the 80s are best known for, especially when combined with the music if not just nighttime. Almost as though they were built and lit to be works of dreamlike art themselves. Its meditative approach takes advantage of the premise as a convenient repository for the sames Hughes inspired moments before the subtle horror sets in. Yeah, some of the acting, dialogue (be it due to the cheesiness or dated colloquialisms), and even sound editting, could've been better. It just felt like a movie that was more concerned with being actiony, fun and nevertheless emotionally satisfying than the kind of professional yet restrained good anyone was taught to believe in after the 80s ended. It's aware that perfection is subjective yet seeks its own definition anyway depending on how anyone chooses to have it pan out.
