Freddy vs. Jason Review

There has always been a line between making horror movies too excessive to be watchable and too silly to be scary. While stuff like Saw or The Devil’s Rejects were trying to test the goodwill of the audience on one end of the spectrum (as well as potentially their stomachs) movies like Freddy vs. Jason were reminding us of how silly 80s slashers were starting to get in the 2000s. Had this been more based on the first movies then there may have been a balance. But not only had as much a franchise as a fanbase been built up in both films there had also been a hint at this movie by the end of the last Friday the 13th. Yes, it took them an entire decade until it would be possible, and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare didn’t exactly welcome new ideas for Freddy even in the 90s. So really this was more a case of doing something because you (promised you) could rather than you should’ve. This could especially explain why it’s so silly to begin with as fans themselves were probably aware that horror nowadays was probably only going to get worse for their tastes. Meaning they were either going to see the price of scraping the very wood off the bottom of the barrel to keep this kind of horror alive in the form of the same Saw or Rob Zombies films, or they would get more of the same silly vibes in the form of Alien vs. Predator, Seed of Chucky, or even Jeepers Creepers. (Note: Yeah, as I mentioned in icons of horror 3 they could still make them like they used to if you took the time, but you either did it right like Prometheus, Prey and Scream 2022, or you risked either this same Freddy vs. Jason and the eponymous slashers’ standalone remakes in 2009 and 2010)
