My horror movie reviews

Follow You (2016) Review

There were just too many reasons why I couldn't exclude this:

  1. The fact it begins with “Anyone” from the It Follows OST.
  2. (SPOILER) Just as the singing begins, we are treated to what I can only describe as a Hard R parody of Old Yeller.
  3. The homages to Shaun of the Dead, The Exorcist, and probably The Purge (if not the obvious Sam Raimi movie in the chorus).
  4. I not only included Thriller on this list (despite that music video being The Jaws to counter this video’s Piranha 3D) but that the band has also subtly referenced the former in one of their other horror inspired video for “Drown”, even as that one isn’t really scary by comparison.
  5. The fact it’s longer than 2018’s “The Box”.

So now that we got that out of the way, let’s talk about the video in itself. From the moment we sit through the entire thing we either immediately hate the band or we have one of the worst kinds of acquired tastes: British humor/humouour. After all the song alone sounds like it has a place with power ballads from the mid to early 90s. In fact if you take the sarcastic horror elements out (which should definitely still be a thing as long as horror musicals exist) you’re essentially treated to other homages from The Sound of Music to Fawlty Towers just to have spotted those select few. But much like its successor, “This Is America” by Childish Gambino, Follow You is very much an over-the-top horror short that isn’t even afraid to “go there” (particularly in that scene with the police) for the sake of sacrificing subtlety. It does, however, do most people a favor by going no longer than 4 minutes and 50 seconds.
