Coven (1997) Review

In 2012 I saw a documentary about this flick called American Movie. Don't really remember much from that film past how passionate Mr. Borchardt was and how he also wanted to make another film called "Northwestern". Of course the aformentioned Movie is another topic, I'm here to talk about Coven. Past the fact that it is the Plan 9 of the 90s to equate American Movie's Ed Wood, Coven certainly aims for that same Begotten vibe in terms of black and white/atmosphere. Granted the only thing it might pull off nicely is the 80s inspired synth. Granted there are pros as much as cons. The pros usually appear abruptly, from it emenating Begotten the most with the hooded figures (especially in the forest) to the emotionaly visceral performances of the group. Plus some of the visuals and same creepy atmosphere are fun when the music fits. As though Mr. Borchardt is an aficionado for all the eras of horror films involving cults that came before. For anyone who saw American Movie you can really tell why bits and pieces took 2 years to make despite being a short film in black and white.

Hence why that same documentary could probably explain the cons better than I could.
