Child's Play (2019) Review

The argument could be made that watching this film was a privelege, but if you haven't seen what I had to deal with from this franchise you'd see what I mean. For one this version is less worried about people who knew the twist from the original (like myself) and more about paying homage to so many other films that have existed since before and after from an implicit homage to Argento's Suspiria (in terms of the home's design and obviously the violence) to the explicit Texas Chainsaw Massacre reference. But once thing that 2019's Child's Play does better than most horror films released that year is how Chucky's high tech makeover adapts with the times in terms of blatantly yet cleverly bringing to light the psychological aspects of Andy's story. Granted it also makes references to as much the original films (in terms of Shane's death being a reversal of Child's Play 2 when a character falls on his head instead of his foot), as films like Saw (during the peeping Tom janitor's scene) or even The Ring (when Chucky flat out hacks a television or two in front of Andy) if not King's works like Christine or Pet Cemetary as well with the obvious fate of the cat and the fact Chucky is as much a child's version of a deranged buick as he controls one during the third act. Anything else I may have to say was most likely already mentioned in my reviews for films like The Banana Splits movies or M3GAN as those same Child's Play installments. Obviously this version knows people have gotten used to too many kinds of horror to expect the original and essentially possesses as much as Chucky as the kitchen sink to go further than usual with the genre.
