My horror movie reviews

Carrie (1976) Review

As far as 70s horror movies go this is a rare case of substance over style from a decade best known for its excess in exploitation (Almost like The Wicker Man). That might also explain why it took them until 2013 to remake it rather than a decade prior to the latter (the 2000s), when most movies were trying to dethrone the 70s by garnering inspiration from them. It’s also, strangely enough, the one horror movie which feels the least like it’s based on a Stephen King novel. That’s not to say it’s not gruesome in itself as the iconic prom scene is the one quick case when the 70s really shined through in their excessive nature. But I also have to hand it to them: It’s less like The Exorcist and more like The Mist or Garland’s Men in terms of how it brings to light the darker side of certain creeds (at least in a manner that contributes to the story without getting in its way). It’s also one of Miss Spacek’s most real performances since The Straight Story.
