Beyond the Black Rainbow Review

The only reason I saw this movie is because it was the first movie Mandy director, Panos Cosmatos, made. In many ways it reminds me of the 10s at their best: trying to recapture the past 80s atmosphere before it became the generic kind of nostalgia that gave way into the 90s. I feel as though, besides having it be literally a classic case of style over substance (as Mr. Cosmatos sure loves his 80s) that, surprisingly enough, it was meant to be. Even though there are signs that Mr. Cosmatos could’ve easily favored the substance over the style he might've felt as though it would’ve been too straightforward (like he did with Mandy). For some it may have failed to be deep due to that. But overall the post-Kubrick vibes (and restrained/sole yet sincere nod to Begotten) are still fun to watch nonetheless.
